Fume Hood DOs and DON’Ts

  • 🗸 Know all the chemicals you work with. Consult SDS if you’re unsure.
  • 🗸 Check that the hood is turned and the airflow within the required range.
  • 🗸 Use proper protective equipment
  • 🗸 Elevate large equipment, like your centrifuge, to prevent airflow blockage.
  • 🗸 Make sure sash is at the correct level
  • 🗸 Keep all materials inside sash no fewer than 6 inches away from sash
  • X Don’t use the hood for chemicals it wasn’t designed for
  • X Don’t permanently store chemicals inside the hood
  • X Don’t position fan or air conditioner that direct airflow across the hood’s face
  • X Don’t block airflow through the baffles or baffle exhaust slots.
  • X Don’t leave sash open when not in use
  • X Don’t use a fume hood with biohazardous agents.
