How do you choose a centrifuge tube?

There are a few things you probably know off the top of your head that can help choose your centrifuge tubes.

1. How fast do you need to spin?

Look for the spin rate or the RCF or RPM. They're not interchangeable. But chances are you know one of them in relation to your application, and you can't go outside that number.

2. Chemical resistance?

Polypropylene stands up to most of what you do. That's why most plastic centrifuge tubes are formed from it.

3. Volume of your samples?

Unless you're spinning in an ultracentrifuge, you can use tubes that are larger than the volume you actually need. Your volume should fill the tube about ¾ of the way.

4. Glass or plastic?

Plastic is disposable. Glass is reusable. Plastic is affordable. Glass has great clarity.
