Amber vs. clear borosilicate glass NMR tubes

Amber NMR Tubes: Amber NMR tubes are designed to protect light-sensitive samples from photodegradation. These tubes are ideal for applications where exposure to light could alter the sample's composition, ensuring the integrity of your results.

Clear NMR Tubes: Clear NMR tubes provide maximum visibility, allowing for easy inspection and monitoring of samples. These tubes are perfect for general-purpose applications where visual assessment of the sample is required.
What are NMR tubes?
NMR tubes are thin, glass tubes of different lengths, wall thicknesses, outer diameters, cambers, concentricities, and I.D. and O.D. tolerances designed to hold samples during nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis.
Typically made of borosilicate glass and offered in seven- and eight-inch lengths, the outer diameter of the tube can range from 3mm to 10mm, with 5mm being the most common. For greater testing precision, look for thin-walled NMR tubes. Quartz NMR tubes with low boron concentrations are also available if boron NMR is used.
NMR tubes are required for analyzing samples using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Choose an NMR tube that most closely matches the frequency (MHz) of your spectrometer. NMR tubes are available in reusable or disposable versions. Some versions have screw caps, with or without septa. Polyethylene caps are the most common.
Specifications for NMR tubes may include concentricity and camber:
- Concentricity: How round the tube is, measured using the inner and outer walls.
- Camber: A measure of the tube's straightness; poor camber can cause the tube to wobble during rotation, producing spinning side bands.
How to clean NMR tubes?
Proper cleaning of NMR tubes is crucial to maintain their performance and extend their lifespan. Follow these steps to ensure your NMR tubes remain in optimal condition:
Initial rinse
Begin by rinsing the NMR tube with a suitable solvent to remove any residual substances. This helps in loosening any adhered particles or contaminants.
Detergent wash
Use a mild detergent and a soft brush to thoroughly clean the inside of the tube. Gently scrub to avoid scratching the glass surface.
Final rinse
Rinse the tube with deionized water to remove any detergent residues. Ensure all cleaning agents are completely washed out to prevent interference with future samples.
Drying
Air dry the NMR tube or use an oven to ensure complete drying. Avoid using compressed air, which can introduce contaminants.
NMR tubes for ASTM and EPA test methods
Our NMR tubes support key ASTM, EPA, and ISO test methods used in the petroleum industry, including:
ASTM D7171
This standard test method determines the hydrogen content of middle distillate petroleum products by low-resolution pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
ASTM D5292
This method measures the aromatic carbon content in hydrocarbon oils using high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
ASTM D4806
NMR tubes are used to determine ethanol purity and composition, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards for fuel blending.
EPA Method 510.1
While primarily a gas chromatography method, NMR tubes can be used in the sample preparation process to identify and quantify contaminants in petroleum products and their impact on water quality.
EPA SW-846 Method 8260B
NMR spectroscopy can complement this method by providing structural information of the compounds, enhancing the accuracy of VOC analysis.
